An Issuing Officer with the Giles County School Board Office issues work permits to residents of Virginia who are at least 14 years of age and who have not yet reached their 16 birthday.  

To apply for a work permit, the following documents are required:

  1. Intention to Employ  - to be completed by the employer and brought to the Issuing Officer prior to any employment. Hours of work permitted by law are restricted.  Please read the law thoroughly.

  2. Permission for Employment  - to be completed and signed by a parent or guardian in the presence of the Issuing Officer.

  3. Employment Certificate - to be completed by the Issuing Officer once the first two documents are attained.  Evidence of the minor's age must be presented and may include any of the following: 

A copy of the Employment Certificate, once completed and evidence of age is presented, is issued to the minor who should then present it to his/her employer and employment may begin. If the minor changes employers, it is necessary to complete this same process to receive a new Employment Certificate.
