*School Board Hears an Educational Feature by Eastern Elementary/Middle School

Sherry Kelley, EEMS teacher, attended the meeting to introduce John and Nancy McCord, who have spent numerous hours as volunteers at EEMS to assist in enhancing students’ writing and reading skills by working with third and fifth graders in phonics and writing. They began three years ago with a one hour program which has grown, developing into many more hours, along with many more volunteer tasks. The goal is to increase students’ vocabulary through phonics and help them to know that reading can be fun, which in turn, can help them with their SOL test scores. It is also hopeful that all students will eventually be reading at their grade level. Through the coordination of teachers and Mr. McCall, 2 thirty minute remediation sessions are held weekly. Mrs. McCord is also responsible for the program, "Kingdom of the Gold Coin" which offers students incentives to earn collector’s cards and "gold dollars". Success and praise are a very important part of the learning process to encourage students to want to learn to read. Mr. and Mrs. McCord highly commended Mrs. Kelly for her efforts regarding working with volunteers and giving good direction that benefits all students.

The School Board made their annual "School Tours" visits prior to the meeting, which is always a pleasure. Board members were impressed with the operations in all buildings. Everything seems to be running smooth.

The Superintendent shared numbers from the Parent/Teacher Conferences that were held in each school. The percentage of parent visits was extremely good, which reflects important parent involvement.
