Summer Food Program - Your child (through age 18) can receive a
FREE nutritious lunch during the summer months regardless of your
income. Narrows High School & Macy McClaugherty School will be the
host sites for this program.  Lunch will be served between 11:30 am and
1:00 pm on selected dates.

artists during the new exhibition, Young Artists: Home at the Ruth C Horton Gallery
Moss Arts Center - 190 Alumni Mall Blacksburg.  Giles Co Public Schools art teacher,
Amber Nelson, area artists, community organizations and Moss Arts Center
Exhibition Porgram Manager Meggin Hicklin offered a series of workshops for
students in fourth through seventh grades where the students were encouraged to
capture the landscapes of Giles County. The final projects will be featured at the
free exhibition (light refreshments, casual). Come celebrate our talented young
students!

"Thank A Teacher" Campaign - Governor McAuliffe, in a partnership
with the VA Lottery, the VA Tourism Corp and the VA PTA, is
celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week (May 2-6) by pledging to thank
as many Virginia K-12 teachers as possible for their hard work. The public
is encouraged to participate by sending thank-you notes to school
teachers. "Every day, educators from across the Commonwealth are
providing our young people with the world class education they need to
be successful and these teachers deserve our gratitude," Gov. McAuliffe
said.  

2016 Teacher of the Year:  Congratulations to Mrs. Amy Clark,
Guidance Counselor at Narrows Elementary/Middle School, in earning Giles
County's Teacher of the Year award for 2016! We are proud to have her
represent Giles County and look forward to future announcements
regarding Virginia's Regional Teacher of the Year recipients.  Join us in

Narrows High Recognized in Top 100 - Congratulations to Narrows
High School for earning a place on the 2016 100 Best w!se High Schools
Teaching Personal Finance national ranking!  This recognition was created
by Working in Support of Education (w!se), a leading provider of financial
education programs. Narrows High school students scored among the
highest in the country on the w!se Financial Literacy Certification test

McGlothlin Award - Congratulations to Giles High School History
Teacher, Ms. Lynn Williams, for finishing as a finalist for the McGlothlin
Award for Teaching Excellence during a ceremony at Radford University
on April 7th.  The McGlothlin Award for Teaching Excellence is given
annually by the McGlothlin Foundation to two teachers who live in
selected portions of Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia and Kentucky. 
Join us in congratulating Ms. Williams!  We're proud of her
accomplishments!

Giles Rescue Squad Open House & Family Celebration - Saturday,
April 2, 2016 from 11am until 4pm.  Transportation is available. Activities
will include: a bounce house, face painting, art activities, free books, a
real helicopter to explore, raffles, prizes, free books and more!Students of
all ages welcome!

Eastern Elem/Middle - Ocean Project (Video)

43rd Annual Regional Spelling Bee : Best Wishes to Rae Broyles, 7th
grade student at Macy McClaugherty School, as she competes in The
Roanoke Times Regional Spelling Bee Competition on Saturday, March
12th! The Bee will be held at the Holiday Inn on Ordway Drive beginning
at 10am.


Regional Finals History Bee:  Four students have advanced to the
Regional Finals for the National History Bee to be held in Charlotte on
Wednesday, May 4, 2016.  Congratulations to all !  We're proud of your
accomplishments and look forward to hearing of your continued
successes!  Join us in wishing them well !

County Spelling Bee: sponsored by Scripps Howard and the Roanoke
Times, was held on Friday, February 19, 2016 at the School Board Office.  
Rae Broyles, daughter of Rikki Jennell and Doug Broyles, won the Spelling
Bee in the 4th round by spelling the word “sustainable”. Rae is a seventh
grade student at Macy McClaugherty School. The Spelling Bee is open to
students in fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades.
Winners from each of the five schools participating in the County Spelling
Bee were:
Lola Campbell, 7th grade, Narrows Elementary/Middle School
Jonah Williams 5th grade, Eastern Elementary/Middle School
Lucas Morris, 8th grade, Giles High School
Rae Broyles, 7th grade, Macy McClaugherty School

Spelling Bee: Giles County Schools will hold their county spelling bee on
Tuesday, February 19, 2016 at the School Board Office at 1pm. 
Congratulations to each of the five school winners who will be
participating: Jonah Williams, 5th grade EEMS, Rae Broyles, 7th grade
MMS, Lola Campbell, 7th Grade NEMS, Lucas Morris, 8th grade GHS and
Michael Westbrook, 8th grade NHS.  (Snow Date - Feb 19th)

FAFSA Completion Workshops - Tuesday, Feb. 23rd between 3pm-
7pm at the Giles Technology Center or Monday, Feb 29th between 3pm-
7pm at Narrows High School.  All parents/guardians are invited to attend
either event.  Assistants will be available to help you complete the online

New River Community College Partnership which makes college available,

Red Ribbon Campaign Winner - Congratulations Eastern
Elem/Middle School - for earning recognition as the Red Ribbon Photo
Contest School Winner for Region 3 ! The purpose of the contest was to
involve families, schools and communities in spreading a message that
promotes healthy and drug free kids. Visit the Red Ribbon Photo Contest

Congratulations to Heidi Sizemore for receiving the Outstanding
Career and Technical Education New Teacher Award in July, 2015 during
the State Conference !  The award was presented by Virginia's Health
and Medical Sciences Educator's Association.  The purpose is to recognize
new health occupations education teachers who are providing
outstanding career and technical education programs for youth and or
adults in one of the health fields. Recipients of this award must have
made significant contributions toward innovative, unique, and novel
programs which are serving to improve and promote career and technical
education.  Join us in congratulating Heidi in this honor and for all that
she has accomplished. 

Congratulations Teresa Lowe for her receiving the Region VII
"Creating Excellence Program" award in June in Richmond !  Join us in
congratulating her for this honor !

Spelling Bee: Giles County Schools held their county spelling bee
sponsored by Scripps Howard and the Roanoke Times on Wednesday,
February 11, 2015.  Haley Hansen, daughter of Lori and Chris Hansen,
won the Spelling Bee in the 22nd round by spelling the word,
"wunderkind".  Haley is a seventh grade student at Eastern
Elementary/Middle School. The Spelling Bee is open to students in fifth,
sixth, seventh and eighth grades.  Winners from each of the five schools
participating in the County Spelling Bee were:  Jamie Wall, 5th grade
NEMS, Peyton Rader, 7th grade MMS, Frankie Cahoon, 8th grade NHS,
Haley Hansen, 7th grade EEMS and Adellaide Nielson, 8th grade GHS.
Congratulations to all of the school winners and good luck to Haley as she
travels to Roanoke for the next level of competition!  Thank you to all
the facilitators at the schools for all the work you do!  Thank you to Josh
Sparks for serving as our district pronouncer!

National History Bee: The results of the On-line Qualifying Exam have
been shared and congratulations are in order for all five students that
participated in the On-Line Qualifying exam. They will all advance to the
next round of competition. Caleb Clemons and Frankie Cahoon, both 8th
grade students at NHS, Cale Daniels, 8th grader at GHS, Morgan Ralph,
7th grader at NEMS and Lucas Morris, 7th grader at Macy, have been
invited to the Regional Finals in Charlotte, NC on February 14, 2015. The
highest ORQE scorers in each of the 37 regions attend and compete at
the Regional Finals which are organized and staffed by the National
History Bee. These five GCPS students will participate in several rounds of
buzzer competition. The top students from each of the Regional Finals
qualify to participate in the National Finals in May. Congratulations and
Good Luck to All!


Congratulations to the 2015 School History Bee winners!  The top five
scores in the Intramural Bee held at each school are: Cale Daniels (8th
grade GHS), Lucas Morris (7th grade Macy), Morgan Ralph (7th grade
NEMS), Caleb Clemons (8th grade NHS) and Frankie Cahoon (8th grade
NHS).  They participated in the On-Line Qualifying exam held at Narrow
High School to determine if they will move on to the next level of
competition.  Those selected will travel to Charlotte, NC on February 14,
2015 to participate with other students in the Regional History Bee. 

During the 14-15 school year, curriculum related to Family Life Education
(FLE) will be covered by your child's teacher.  A copy of the FLE
objectives can be found under the "Parents" menu above or at each
school or the School Board Office.

Presidential Award for Excellence in Math & Science:  EEMS
Teacher, Margret Journell, is one of five Virginia teachers who have been
selected as state finalists for the 2014 Presidential Award for Excellence in
Mathematics and Science Teaching. The award, ­regarded as the nation’s
top honor for mathematics and science teachers, ­ recognizes teachers
who develop and implement high-quality instructional programs that

NEMS Teachers Participate in VISTA Initiative - This summer, four
teachers from Narrows Elementary/Middle joined initiative designed to
change how science is taught across Virginia.  Krista Dascano, Sarah
McGlogthin, Donna Ralph and Michelle Robertson began a year-long
program with the Virginia Initiative for Science Teaching and
Achievement (VISTA), which kicked off with an intensive, four-week
Elementary Science Institute at Virginia Tech.
Funded by a $34m grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the
program applies the principles of hands-on science, student-centered
inquiry, the nature of science, and problem-based learning.  For more

Attention High School Students/Parents: Students and their families
are encouraged to use a variety of information sources to select a college
and major. The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV)
provided one such source that is available here.


Free Summer Food Programs continue again this summer offering free
nutritious meals at two locations throughout the summer.  Visit Macy

Summer Governor's School: Darien Nagel from Narrows High School
and Rachel Ingram from Giles High School have been selected to attend
Summer Governor’s School for Theater Arts at the University of Virginia’s
College at Wise.   Each summer the program serves 20-24 students
selected to represent their school districts in a 3-week residential,
collegiate program (conferring 3 college credits) for academically gifted
and high achieving juniors and seniors (rising).  There is no cost to the
students selected to attend and they receive three college credits, free
of charge, upon completion of the program!  Nominated students should
have clearly demonstrated mature achievement in performance, theatrical
design, or technical theater.  Additional information about the program

National Finals: On June 6-8,  Caleb Clemons, from Narrows
Elementary/Middle School, will compete in the National Finals of the
National History Bee in Atlanta, Georgia.  In order to qualify for the
National Finals he advanced through multiple stages of competition,
including an intramural completion, an online test and a head-to-head
regional competition.  Of the more than 10,000 students who began the
competition in October, only six hundred will compete in the National
Finals.  Congratulations Caleb and we wish you the best in Atlanta!


2014 Teacher of the Year: Congratulations to Mrs. Melanie Atkins,
English Teacher at Narrows High School, in earning Giles County's Teacher
of the Year award for 2014 !   We are proud to have her represent Giles
County and look forward to future announcements revealing Virginia's
Regional Teacher of Year recipients.  Join us in wishing Melanie the bestl!

Summer Food Service Program earns recognition and a "Certificate of
Appreciation" from the United State Department of Agriculture !  During
the March School Board meeting, Dr. Molly O'Dell, Health Director for the
New River Health District, presented a plaque honoring the school system
for the outstanding initiative and innovation put forth, making the 2013
Summer Food program a tremendous success. The program enlisted the
assistance of over 70 volunteers and received support from local

NRV Leading Lights recognized Rebecca Kay Stephens, an 11th grader
at Giles High and Shana Davis a 12th grade student at Narrows High for
their voluntary service and community-changing activities at an Awards
Banquet & Ceremony on Thursday evening, April 10th.  Ms. Stephens,
the overall winner of the High School Award was nominated by GHS
Teacher, Mrs. Mattie Ward, and Ms. Davis was nominated by NHS
Teacher, Mr. Dennis Kidd. This program began in 2007, prompted by the
outpouring of voluntary service after the shootings at Virginia Tech.
Congratulations to these exemplary students for their compassion and

2014-15 School Calendar

Congratulations to Eastern Elem/Middle School student, Haley Hansen,
for winning the County-Wide Spelling Bee!  Haley won the bee when she
correctly spelled "earthenware" in the 36th round.  She will represent
Giles County at the Roanoke Times Regional Spelling Bee on March 22nd. 
Narrows Elem/Middle School student, Frankie Cahoon, is first runner-up.
Super job everyone and best wishes to Haley as she prepares for regional
competition!

CTE Month - Governor McAuliffe recognizes February as CTE (Career and
Technical Education) Month.  Visit the Giles County Technology Center to
learn more about the outstanding CTE programs offered in Giles County.
CTE programs here and throughout Virginia and the nation are preparing
students to be college and career ready by providing academic,
employability and technical job-specific skills.

History Bee Winners to Compete in Charlotte - We are proud to
announce four students will be representing Giles County in the Regional
History Bee competition in Charlotte, NC on Monday, February 10th.

Welcome Board: We wish to congratulate and welcome newly elected
School Board Member, Mr. Eric Gentry as well as returning School Board
Member, Mrs. Drema K. McMahon.  Mr. Gentry joins current Board
Members Mrs. McMahon, Mr. Joseph M. Gollehon Jr, Mr. Ronald B.
Whitehead and Dr. J. Lewis Webb. We look forward to the educational
contributions and leadership that each will provide in 2014 and beyond.

Thanks Mr. Buckland:  The December 19th regular meeting of the Giles
Board of Education began an evening of recognition for exiting School
Board Chairman, Mr. J.B. Buckland. Mr. Buckland was recognized for his 33
years of continuous commitment to serving the students of Giles County.
He was honored at a surprise reception at Eastern Elem/Middle School.
Mr. Buckland is in an elite group of only four Board Members across the
State of Virginia who have dedicated 33 years, or more, in service to
their school communities.  Superintendent, Dr. Terry E. Arbogast, II, and
many others, expressed their appreciation for his unwavering
commitment, dedication and leadership. His impact on our school system
will continue to serve us in the coming years. Thanks and best wishes Mr.
Buckland!

State Championship: Congratulations to head coach Jeff Williams, the
entire coaching staff, and the 2013 Giles High Spartan football team on
their 20-19 overtime win in Salem on Saturday, earning the Group 2A
State Championship!  With this win Giles completed a perfect 15-0 season
and claimed its fourth state title in school history following previous
championships in 1980, 1993 and 2005.  Great Job!

Christmas Artwork: Congratulations to third grade students Abbie,
Ryane and Mason on their Christmas drawings!  Visit our Christmas site to
view their artwork.  Each will be recognized during the December 19th
School Board meeting.

2013 Teacher of the Year: Congratulations to Gary Hinson, Science
Teacher at Narrows High School, in his earning the 2013 Giles County
Teacher of the Year Award!

McGlothlin Award: Pam MacDonald, 5th grade Teacher at Macy
McClaugherty, was a 2013 recipient of McGlothlin Award and received
$25,000.  Congratulations Pam!  Read more about this prestigious award
