Leadership Conference - Sergeant Scott Moye, of the Giles County
Sheriff's Office, presented during the general session of the Southwest
Virginia Leadership Conference held on October 21, 2016 at the
Southwest Virginia Higher Ed Center in Abingdon. Sergeant Moye's
presentation, "Avoid, Deny, and Defend: Responding to Active Shooter
Situations" was part of the Conference sponsored by UVA's College at
Wise Center for Teaching Excellence and the Southwest Virginia Public
Giles High School Group 2A State Golf Champions - Congratulations
to Giles High's Golf Team for earning the State Group 2A Championship
Title on October 11 at the Heritage Oaks par 70 Golf Course in

STEM Summit at Virginia Tech - Christina Martin, STEM Teacher, and
Nanosonic representatives presented information on Giles County Schools'
innovative STEM activities during the STEM Summit held at VA Tech on
October 3rd. During the Summit, outstanding programs were shared and
partnerships expanded to create high quality STEM education throughout
Southwest Virginia and beyond.

Program, during the No Kid Hungry Virginia Summit on Sept. 22 at The
Inn at Virginia Tech. Through the work of the No Kid Hungry campaign
and First Lady, Dorothy McAuliffe, access to nutritious food continues to
improve for students across the Commonwealth.

Giles County Agriculture Land Lab - Classroom instruction in and
about agriculture including production of marketable crops, cattle, and
vegetables while incorporating math, reading, social studies and physical,

Parents Night At the School Board Office - Thanks to everyone who
attended and participated in our first annual Parent Night on August
16th! We look forward to making this an annual event where we'll share
information on a variety of topics including meal applications, bus
transportation, counseling services, special and gifted education, STEM
activities, PowerSchool, SOL Testing, school health services, screenings,
the e-Learning Backpack Initiative, the agriculture land lab, the ACCE
program, the Governor's school application process, the summer youth

students in fourth through seventh grades where the students were encouraged to
capture the landscapes of Giles County. The final projects will be featured at the

with the VA Lottery, the VA Tourism Corp and the VA PTA, is
celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week (May 2-6) by pledging to thank
as many Virginia K-12 teachers as possible for their hard work. The public
is encouraged to participate by sending thank-you notes to school

providing our young people with the world class education they need to

Rae Broyles, daughter of Rikki Jennell and Doug Broyles, won the Spelling
Bee in the 4th round by spelling the word “sustainable”. Rae is a seventh

Spelling Bee: Giles County Schools held their county spelling bee
sponsored by Scripps Howard and the Roanoke Times on Wednesday,
February 11, 2015. Haley Hansen, daughter of Lori and Chris Hansen,
won the Spelling Bee in the 22nd round by spelling the word,
"wunderkind". Haley is a seventh grade student at Eastern
Elementary/Middle School. The Spelling Bee is open to students in fifth,
sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Winners from each of the five schools
participating in the County Spelling Bee were: Jamie Wall, 5th grade
NEMS, Peyton Rader, 7th grade MMS, Frankie Cahoon, 8th grade NHS,
Haley Hansen, 7th grade EEMS and Adellaide Nielson, 8th grade GHS.

travels to Roanoke for the next level of competition! Thank you to all

National History Bee: The results of the On-line Qualifying Exam have
been shared and congratulations are in order for all five students that
participated in the On-Line Qualifying exam. They will all advance to the
next round of competition. Caleb Clemons and Frankie Cahoon, both 8th
grade students at NHS, Cale Daniels, 8th grader at GHS, Morgan Ralph,
7th grader at NEMS and Lucas Morris, 7th grader at Macy, have been
invited to the Regional Finals in Charlotte, NC on February 14, 2015. The
highest ORQE scorers in each of the 37 regions attend and compete at
the Regional Finals which are organized and staffed by the National
History Bee. These five GCPS students will participate in several rounds of
buzzer competition. The top students from each of the Regional Finals
qualify to participate in the National Finals in May. Congratulations and
Good Luck to All!
Congratulations to the 2015 School History Bee winners! The top five
scores in the Intramural Bee held at each school are: Cale Daniels (8th
grade GHS), Lucas Morris (7th grade Macy), Morgan Ralph (7th grade
NEMS), Caleb Clemons (8th grade NHS) and Frankie Cahoon (8th grade
NHS). They participated in the On-Line Qualifying exam held at Narrow
High School to determine if they will move on to the next level of
competition. Those selected will travel to Charlotte, NC on February 14,
2015 to participate with other students in the Regional History Bee.
During the 14-15 school year, curriculum related to Family Life Education
(FLE) will be covered by your child's teacher. A copy of the FLE

Presidential Award for Excellence in Math & Science: EEMS
Teacher, Margret Journell, is one of five Virginia teachers who have been
selected as state finalists for the 2014 Presidential Award for Excellence in
Mathematics and Science Teaching. The award, regarded as the nation’s
top honor for mathematics and science teachers, recognizes teachers
who develop and implement high-quality instructional programs that
improve student learning. Congratulations Mrs. Journell! We wish you the
NEMS Teachers Participate in VISTA Initiative - This summer, four
teachers from Narrows Elementary/Middle joined initiative designed to
change how science is taught across Virginia. Krista Dascano, Sarah
McGlogthin, Donna Ralph and Michelle Robertson began a year-long
program with the Virginia Initiative for Science Teaching and
Achievement (VISTA), which kicked off with an intensive, four-week
Elementary Science Institute at Virginia Tech.
Funded by a $34m grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the
program applies the principles of hands-on science, student-centered
inquiry, the nature of science, and problem-based learning. For more

Summer Governor's School: Darien Nagel from Narrows High School
and Rachel Ingram from Giles High School have been selected to attend
Summer Governor’s School for Theater Arts at the University of Virginia’s
College at Wise. Each summer the program serves 20-24 students
selected to represent their school districts in a 3-week residential,
collegiate program (conferring 3 college credits) for academically gifted
and high achieving juniors and seniors (rising). There is no cost to the
students selected to attend and they receive three college credits, free
of charge, upon completion of the program! Nominated students should
have clearly demonstrated mature achievement in performance, theatrical
design, or technical theater. Additional information about the program
National Finals: On June 6-8, Caleb Clemons, from Narrows
Elementary/Middle School, will compete in the National Finals of the
National History Bee in Atlanta, Georgia. In order to qualify for the
National Finals he advanced through multiple stages of competition,
including an intramural completion, an online test and a head-to-head
regional competition. Of the more than 10,000 students who began the
competition in October, only six hundred will compete in the National
Finals. Congratulations Caleb and we wish you the best in Atlanta!
2014 Teacher of the Year: Congratulations to Mrs. Melanie Atkins,
English Teacher at Narrows High School, in earning Giles County's Teacher
of the Year award for 2014 ! We are proud to have her represent Giles

Summer Food Service Program earns recognition and a "Certificate of
Appreciation" from the United State Department of Agriculture ! During
the March School Board meeting, Dr. Molly O'Dell, Health Director for the
New River Health District, presented a plaque honoring the school system
for the outstanding initiative and innovation put forth, making the 2013
Summer Food program a tremendous success. The program enlisted the
assistance of over 70 volunteers and received support from local
NRV Leading Lights recognized Rebecca Kay Stephens, an 11th grader
at Giles High and Shana Davis a 12th grade student at Narrows High for
their voluntary service and community-changing activities at an Awards
the overall winner of the High School Award was nominated by GHS
Teacher, Mrs. Mattie Ward, and Ms. Davis was nominated by NHS
Teacher, Mr. Dennis Kidd. This program began in 2007, prompted by the
outpouring of voluntary service after the shootings at Virginia Tech.
Congratulations to these exemplary students for their compassion and

Thanks Mr. Buckland: The December 19th regular meeting of the Giles
Board of Education began an evening of recognition for exiting School
Board Chairman, Mr. J.B. Buckland. Mr. Buckland was recognized for his 33
years of continuous commitment to serving the students of Giles County.
He was honored at a surprise reception at Eastern Elem/Middle School.
Mr. Buckland is in an elite group of only four Board Members across the
State of Virginia who have dedicated 33 years, or more, in service to
their school communities. Superintendent, Dr. Terry E. Arbogast, II, and
many others, expressed their appreciation for his unwavering
commitment, dedication and leadership. His impact on our school system
will continue to serve us in the coming years. Thanks and best wishes Mr.
State Championship: Congratulations to head coach Jeff Williams, the
entire coaching staff, and the 2013 Giles High Spartan football team on
their 20-19 overtime win in Salem on Saturday, earning the Group 2A
State Championship! With this win Giles completed a perfect 15-0 season
and claimed its fourth state title in school history following previous
championships in 1980, 1993 and 2005. Great Job!
